Dr Thiruchelvam is a Specialist ENT, Head & Neck Surgeon who offers a full scope of practice and specialises in complicated sinus and sleep surgery.

Dr Thya grew up in the Maitland area and attended Maitland Boys High School where he had the privilege of being elected School Captain. His father worked as a local General Practitioner in Maitland for 33 years. His mother was a local High School Science teacher. His brother Dr Dhan Thiruchelvam has also returned to the local area and works as an Upper Gastrointestinal and Obesity Surgeon.

Dr Thiruchelvam received his Bachelor of Medicine and subsequent Master of Public Health from the University of Sydney. A student at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, he did his residency and early surgical training based at Westmead Hospital.
Dr Thiruchelvam returned to the local area to be closer to his family after his mother developed Lymphoma and tragically passed away. Soon after this Dr Thiruchelvam was given the rare privilege of being offered a position on 4 different surgical training programmes in the same year. He chose and completed ENT Head & Neck training in 2006, prior to completing a Fellowship year at Royal Adelaide hospital.

Dr Thiruchelvam currently consults in the new Cambridge Building located at Newcastle Private Hospital and operates both on-site, as well as at Hunter Valley Private Hospital, Shortland. A respected member of the local Newcastle community, Dr Thiruchelvam has a passion for good health and enjoys yoga and spending time with his son.

Dr Thiruchelvam has an interest in clinical teaching, audit and excellence in clinical care. He has been an examiner for both the University of Newcastle and the Royal College of Surgeons. He served as the Audit representative for ENT, Head and Neck surgery for 12 years including a period as chairman of the Audit Executive Committee at John Hunter Hospital. He has also served on the Medical Advisory committee at both private hospitals he works at. Dr Thiruchelvam is privileged to work with others to ensure excellence in the provision of medical services to the people of the local area.
